Sister Communities of San Ramon, Nicaragua, the trip sponsor, built the foundation for cultural immersion ecotours 16 years ago to help stimulate the local economy by giving people the opportunity to start small businesses that provide services to ecotour groups.
The impact has been immensely positive both for visiting groups as well as for micro-entrepreneurs in San Ramon. The World Tourism Organization, a UN agency, declared this tourism project a model for Sustainable Tourism to End Poverty (STEP) in 2005. The $1,200 cost includes all in-country transportation, wonderful home stays, a stay at international award winning Finca Esperanza Verde Ecolodge and Organic Coffee Farm, and many fascinating and fun activities and performances.
