Consciousness, and how we should relate to non-human minds that might possess it

In one way or another, humans have had to deal with non-human minds for our entire existence. It is only relatively recently that we’ve come to realize and appreciate that other creatures even have minds. Now we’re being faced with the prospect of possibly having to deal with artificial minds. How do we, or should we deal with these various kinds of minds? What do we owe them? To what extent do we owe them moral consideration?
